Prioritisation Matters More Than Ever
The modern world is an overwhelming place.
With next to no effort, you can inundate yourself with ideas, information, and insight from Google and AI. The list of improvements you can (and probably should) make to your business mount up and seem overwhelming.
Alongside this, there’s also more opportunity than ever (if you do the right things) to move the ball down the court and boost your income.
So, the upsides are clear - yes, you can learn more, and improve your business faster than ever.
But, there are also many pitfalls to watch out for in a world with so many options. At the heart of all these is an inability to prioritise effectively.
Let’s look at each of these pitfalls, and how they connect to a failure of prioritisatoin.
Perhaps the most obvious pitfall is that it’s easier to get distracted from doing the work at all - procrastination. Failing to prioritise actually doing the work and moving toward your business goals (by watching Netflix etc.) is itself a failure of prioritisation.
Another potential pitfall is the risk of putting too many things on your plate so that you have more business tasks than you can sensibly move forward. This can mean you end up feeling overwhelmed, and makes it difficult to actually finish any of your projects.
The third and final pitfall we’ll consider comes from working on things in an inefficient order - this is what we typically thing of when we say “poor prioritisation”. This means that, yes, you are making progress, but you’re taking a longer route than necessary to get toward your long term goals.
Realistically, it’s impossible to always be working on the most important thing for your business. That said, it’s more important than ever to take some time every day to cut the wheat from the chaff and try to work on the higher leverage things.
